In The Doll World (ITDW) doll podcast and YouTube channel continues its PRIDE Month celebration with an intimate interview with Joey Versaw, creator of Mary Magpie--the first 3D printed doll; Babette; First Love; Little Head; and, other doll lines.
Joey shares with us how at the tender age of five, he realized he was “different”. Part of that “difference” was his love of dolls. His parents were not fans of Joey’s love; and, they refused to buy him dolls. But that didn’t stop Joey: he made his own dolls! Paper, clay, you name it! If Joey could figure out how to shape it, he made it into a doll!
By the time Joey was 12-years old, he had a solid understanding of his “difference”. He was gay! He felt no need to hide this identity; so, he came out to his friends and family.
This new found understanding led to Joey’s LGBTQ+ activism. At 14, he helped educate local teachers on young queer needs. By 16, Joey was volunteering with Cascade AIDS project and Phoenix Rising. Joey continued making dolls. In 2001, Joey started to seriously sell his creations. In August 2013, Haute Doll Magazine published an article recognizing Joey as the creator of the first 3-D printed fashion doll, Mary Magpie!

Joey says he is excited to see more acceptance of the queer community. “Things are not yet perfect,” he said, “but, I am hopeful people will continue to grow and open their hearts to everyone. Happy Pride month!”
